Clade 1 MPXV a new variant Mpox virus emerged, Does Sweden ready to combat

What is Clade 1 MPXV (Mpox Virus)

The virus is divided into two separate clades:  Clade I and Clade II. Starting in 2022, a global outbreak was caused by Clade II MPXV. Due to the present perception that Clade I MPXV is more severe than Clade II MPXV, it has been classified as a High consequence infectious disease (HCID).

High consequence infectious disease (HCID)

In the UK, a high consequence infectious illness (HCID) is defined as the following criteria:

  • Acute infectious illness.
  • Usually has a high case fatality rate.
  • There may not be effective prophylactic or treatment.
  • Often tough to notice and detect quickly.
  • Capability to disseminate in the community and healthcare settings
  • Requires improved individual, population, and system response to ensure it is managed effectively, efficiently, and safely.

Sweden confirmed the first case of MPXV Clade 1

Sweden reports deadly clade I variant of Monkeypox, first such case outside Africa. Sweden announced the first monkeypox case on Thursday some a day after the World Health Organization WHO categorized the infection as a global emergency. With this, Sweden has also become the first country outside the African continent to report the more contagious strain of Mpox virus.

Stockholm – Sweden

A person who has received care in Stockholm has been found to have contracted the monkeypox through the clade I variant. In a statement, Sweden’s Public Health Agency stated, “It is the first case that has originated from clade I, which has been transmitted outside Africa.”

Professional Views on the Mpox Clade 1 Epidemic

Dr. Magnus Gisslen,

“The patient might have acquired the virus during a trip to the African continent, where the monkeypox clade I outbreak is severe”.

“The fact that a patient with mpox is treated in the country does not affect the risk to the general population, a risk that the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) currently considers very low,”

WHO director general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

“The emergence of a new clade of mpox, its rapid spread in eastern DRC, and the reporting of cases in several neighboring countries are very worrying,”

“On top of outbreaks of other monkeypox clades in DRC and other countries in Africa, it’s clear that a coordinated international response is needed to stop these outbreaks and save lives,”
